I have two suggestions that have really, really helped me learn Spanish in ways that were fun and enjoyable:
1) For vocabulary: in the home, I have been guilty of putting up post-it notes on every.single.object in my house. It doesn't take too long, and it ensures that you will associate that sticky and that word with that object every time you are near it. You will absorb the vocabulary almost effortlessly. Just don't forget about accents! Also, may make having guests over a little interesting. But if you want to learn, i suggest you try it.
2) Practice constantly. I only studied Spanish formally for one year, but for the last 12 years I have been surrounded by Spanish-speaking friends, was engaged to marry a Spanish-speaker (whose parents insisted that I converse with them only in Spanish for 6 years), and watch Spanish television and listen to Spanish radio.
Watching TV and listening to the radio are good, but most of all I highly recommend a tutor who can be your Spanish pen-pal. It is one thing to answer questions in class, and an entirely different thing to have conversations with native speakers, speaking at normal speed. They may be using all the vocabulary and grammar you know, but I know at least for me, at first, it was hard because my brain needed a few extra seconds to translate - and by then the person had moved on! Practicing frequently is essential to truly learning Spanish.
One method I used to improve my understanding is by listening to Spanish music with the Spanish lyrics in front of me and the line by line English translation beside it. It really helps with listening comprehension.
