The colonists felt they had the fought the war to preserve their interests and those of Britain in America, and were still essentially loyal to the British government at this point.
However, by the war's end in 1763 the British had incurred massive debts due to the cost of the war, and started passing a number of taxes and other unpopular measures in the American colonies. This led to increasing dissatisfaction among the colonists, added by the fact that they lacked legislative representation within the British government/parliament to decide on these new measures.
