so what is the difference between the arene rings and these phenyl rings?

No difference. Arenes are just compounds that contain the benzene ring, but as far as I know, "arene" isn't used in naming the compounds. When the benzene ring is incorporated into a structure, it is referred to as phenyl because phenyl is just benzene radical missing one H. Not sure I'm making sense but that's my take on it.
