Hi Delila,
For all of these problems, recall that the perimeter (P) is the sum (total) of all the sides and area (A) is calculated by multiplying the length times the width for a rectangle (or square).
P = 2 • length + 2 • width A = length • width
3. The perimeter of a rectangular hotel room is 68 feet. It is 10 feet wide. How long is it?
P = 2 • length + 2 •10
68 = 2 • length + 20
68-20 = 2 • length + 20 -20
48 = 2 • length
24 feet = length
4. Each side of a square piece of tissue paper is 5 centimeters long. What is the tissue paper's area?
A = length • width
A = 5 • 5 = 25 square centimeters
5. The perimeter of a poster is 16 feet. The poster is 2 feet wide. How tall is it?
P = 2 • length + 2 •2
16 = 2 • length + 4
16 -4 = 2 • length + 4 - 4
12= 2 • length
6 feet = length OR height of poster
6. A square piece of tissue paper has sides that are 5 centimeters long. What is the tissue paper's perimeter?
P = 2 • length + 2 •width
P = 2 • 5 + 2 • 5
P = 10 + 10
P = 20 centimeters
7. The perimeter of a square piece of construction paper is 44 inches. How long is each side of the piece of paper?
P = 2 • length + 2 •width
44 = 2 • length + 2 • width
Since this is a square, the perimeter will be 4 times the side:
44 = 4 • side
11 inches = side measurement
8. A rectangular tent has an area of 32 square feet. Its perimeter is 24 feet. What are the dimensions (length and width) of the tent?
In order for the perimeter to be 24 and the area to 32, you need two numbers whose product is 32 and their sum times 2 to be 24. These number would be 8 feet for the length and 4 feet for the width.
P = 2 • length + 2 •width
P = 2 • 8 + 2 • 4
P = 16 + 8
P = 24 feet
A = length • width
A = 8 • 4
A = 32 square feet
Hope this helps Delila. Let me know if you have additional questions or need any lessons (online as well). Take care!
