Cole spent some time working on his history homework. Then, he spent 5/12 hour working on his Spanish homework. Cole spent 1 hour on homework. What fraction of an hour did Cole spend on history? Explain how you solved the problem.

history homework+Spanish homework = total homework time

x+5/12=1 To solve, subtract 5/12 from both sides

x+5/12-5/12=1-5/12 Simplify

x=1-5/12 Now to subtract, you need a common denominator

x=12/12-5/12

x=(12-5)/12

x=7/12 of an hour on history homework
