lower than in the first. The tax in the first city was 4% , and the tax in the second city was 7.5%. The total hotel tax paid for the two cities was $557.50. How much was the hotel charge in each city before tax?

2nd city be x - 1000

Tax on 1st .04x

Tax on 2nd .075(x - 1000)

.04x + .075(x - 1000) = 557.50

.04x + .075x - 75 = 557.50

.04x + 075x = 632 50

.115x = 632.50

x = 5500

So x - 1000 = 5500 - 1000 = 4500

1st city $5500

2nd city $4500
