Math and science made easy - learn from a retired engineer
Let "y" be the number of years that goes by from now.
In those "y" years, Ben will be "30 + y" years old and Daniel will be "2 + y" years old. If Ben will be 3 times as old as Daniel, then you will be able to multiply Daniel's age be 3 and get Ben's age so:
(30 + y) = 3(2 + y) [now distribute to get:
30 + y = 6 + 3y [now subtract "y" from both sides to get:
30 = 6 + 2y [now subtract 6 from both sides to get:
24 = 2y [now divide both sides by 2 to get:
y = 12
So 12 years go by making Ben 42 and Daniel 14
