It is important to remember the grammatical term "subject pronouns", because that will remind you that in order for the English translation to make sense, you would have to be able to use it as the subject of your sentence. For example, many students will tell me that "él" means "him", but you could never use "him" as the subject of your sentence: Him goes to school. That isn't correct grammar, but "he goes to school" is. So "él" means "he"--not "him".
