You work in a factory in New York, a free state. You are opposed to slavery and think it is wrong. You have just heard about the Fugitive Slave Act and have decided to write a friend to express your opinion on it.

The Fugitive Slave Act required anyone in the country to return slaves to their original owners. If you were someone living in the north, and are opposed to slavery, how do you think you would feel about this? Many escaped slaves during this time were traveling to the northern states where slavery was outlawed. I don't think I personally would want to consider those human beings as slaves in the eyes of the law. I hope this helps!
