This problem is asking us to subtract fractions. I know we are talking about subtraction because of the word "difference". Another way to ask this question is, how much does it take to get from 3/8 to 11/4?
In order to compare fractions, we need to have common denominators. Fourths and eighths are different sizes and therefore hard to compare. If we can rewrite these fractions with the same denominators, we can compare pieces of the same size.
We are going to use the common denominator (bottom number) of 8 because we already have eighths (3/8) and fourths can be rewritten as eighths. So, how many eighths are in 1/4? If you have eight pieces of something and you need to put them into four piles, you will end up with 2 eighths in each pile. 1/4 = 2/8.
If 1/4 = 2/8 then we need to multiply the number of fourths we have by 2 to rewrite it as eighths.
11/4 *2/2 = 22/8
Now we are comparing 22/8 and 3/8. 22/8 - 3/8 = 19/8. The difference between the numbers is 19/8.
