Xavier had 100 dollars. He gave ‘A’ dollars to his brother. He gave his sister 5 dollars more than he gave his brother. He gave his friend twice as much as he gave his sister. He still had some money left.

a) Write down an inequality for A.

b) Solve the inequality.

A + 5 = sister's amount

2(A + 5) = friend's amount

100 - ( A + (A + 5) + 2(A + 5)) > 0

100 - ( A + A + 5 + 2A + 10 > 0

100 - (4A + 15) > 0

100 - 4A - 15 > 0

100 - 15 > 4A Adding 4A to both sides.

85 > 4A

85/4 > A Dividing both sides by 4.

$21.25 > A

A < $21.25

Therefore A = $21.24

CHECKING:

A = Brother = $21.24

A + 5 = Sister = $26.24

2(A + 5) = Fiend = $52.48

Total: = $99.96 Xavier had four cents.
