The abolition movement's various efforts from John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry to Congressional petitions were not in the long run as effective as the clash between the release of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" raising Northern consciences to the inhumanity of slavery at the same time the Southern states attempted to expand slavery with the repeal of the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
