Hi James,
Reasoning is not a passive experience. You can brainstorm with one or more other people; each of you suggesting different possibilities for a given challenge, or you can brainstorm all by yourself by drawing "pro" and "con" columns to determine what answer makes the most sense.
Even if you reason things out within your brain, with no outside input, the electrical action running from synapse to synapse is an "active" endeavor. Of course you might even walk, jog, bike ride, or meditate to reason things out for yourself.
