The Democratic Republicans, or Jeffersonian Republicans, or simply Republicans, were one of America's first political parties. This party formed in the early 1790s as a reaction to the policies of Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton's policies favored business and trade interests, strong central government power, and strong trade relations with England. The Jeffersonians, led by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, favored instead southern agricultural interests, a weak central government, and support for the principles of the French Revolution instead of stronger ties to England.
