One of the most famous and iconic American inventions was the cotton gin, developed by Eli Whitney. This device was patented in 1794.

During this time period, slaves had to pick cotton out of the fields, however the cotton contained seeds that needed to also be removed.

The cotton gin did just that, it removed the seeds from the cotton fiber that was collected.

this device dramatically reduced the time it took to produce cotton.
