It was at this time (1860) when the south was in the early stages of seceding the Union, whilst the Battle of Fort Sumter marked the beginning of the Civil War upon the formation of the Confederate States Army. Because South Carolina was low on ammunition, Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard was put in command of the Confederate States of Army in March 1861. One month later, Fort Sumter was bombarded by the United States Army, igniting the United States Civil War. Yet South Carolina remained undermanned.
