My name is Gloriana, I am originally from Italy.
I am a language learner and I work as a Spanish Linguist Analyst. When I became fluent in Spanish I was not able to understand almost anything in Portuguese. My Brazilian friends were asking me why so I decided to challenge myself. It took me a few years I would say before I became completely fluent. The major difference is that most of the conjugations are different. In Spanish people say Yo fui ( I went) and in Portuguese Eu foi. Another big difference that I noticed is that in Portuguese they tend to put the reflexive pronoun in front of the verb for example:" Mariela fui a su casa a lavarse" in Portuguese they would say "Mariela foi a sua casa para se- lavar". And of course we also have the false friends! Like comprido that in Portuguese means long and in Spanish comprimido means compresses. Apelido en Portuguese means Nickname and in Spanish means last name. Red in Spanish is rojo and Roxo in Portuguese in purple. The two languages are very different I feel like, same as their culture.
