This is a challenging concept for students. To help remember how to convert, I always tell students the decimal starts at gram. If you are going to kg from g, move the decimal to the left three times. If you are going from g to mg, move the decimal to the right three times. And if you are going from kg to milligram or from milligram to kg, move the decimal six time to the right or left, respectively.
