Wow, yeah what a wild question. Three things come to mind that you might look into. (1) Rogue Test - This is a test of self-awareness and is used to demonstrate developmental milestones in toddlers. Sometimes called the Mirror Test, they show the toddler their reflection, have them go play for a moment, and then place a spot of lipstick on their forehead and show them the mirror once again. Recognizing the spot shows that they have self-awareness as they've noticed the change to themselves. (2) Empiricism and Rationalism - Psychology has its roots in Philosophy and a common debate in philosophy is whether our senses truly capture reality or if it is our rational thought that should be more trusted. The debate has evolved especially in light of neuroscience but at the core it remains the same. (3) Existentialism - This theory is based on the idea that we all have 4 truths that we must come to terms with as humans: Life is meaningless, each of us is alone in that no one can completely know another person and their thoughts, we are free to choose the course of our lives, and we all must die. However scary these truths may be our lot in life is to find ways to come to terms with these truths and to use them to live a fulfilling life. Irvin Yalom is one of my favorite existential psychologists but you may also want to check out the book Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.
