Add y to each side of the 2nd equation. Now substitute this equation for y into the 1st equation. Expand & collect terms and you will have a linear equation in x. Solve for x. Then plug the value for x into the equation you got for y and you will get the value of y.

The second equation may be solved for x, so you may "write an expression that you can substitute for x in the top equation of the system."
