I am a recent FGCU Graduate applying to Medical School.
Oxygen is known as the final electron acceptor in the ETC. Its affinity for the electrons allow for the movement of the electrons through the chain. When NADH and FADH2 drop off their electrons, the complexes will pump H+ ions into the inter membrane space which when its flows down its gradient that energy can be used to produce ATP with the help of ATP synthase.
