A. Write the direct variation equation for the scenario above.

 

 

B. Mallory was driving 70 miles per hour and has a stopping distance of 245 feet. What is the constant of proportionality? 

 

C. An insurance company will not pay out if the constant of proportionality is deemed to be greater than .07 as it is considered reckless driving. Base on your answer to part B, would the insurance company pay for Mallory’s wreck?

(a) Let the constant of proportionality be C

the equation becomes

D= CV²

(b) We substitute D= 245 ft and V= 70mph in the equation above and solve for C

245 = C(70²)

C= 245/ 70² = 0.05

(c) Since the calculates value of C=0.05 is less than 0.07, The insurance company will pay for the wreck.

So, k = 0.05
