Prolactin inhibits (another word for 'blocks') synthesis and release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). The function of GnRH is to travel from the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary and trigger release of FSH and LH, both of which are critical hormones for female reproduction. Put another way, prolactin inhibits the female reproductive hypothalamic-pituitary axis.
