Mrs Klein made some fruit buns. She sold 3/5 of them in the morning and 1/4 of them in the afternoon. If she sold 200 more fruit buns in the morning than in the afternoon, how many fruit buns did she make?

Let N = total number of fruit buns sold.

3N/5 were sold in the morning and N/4 in the afternoon.

Note that 200 more buns were sold in the morning vs the afternoon, so the afternoon sales are 200 - N/4.

3N/5 - 200 + N/4 ==> 3N/5 + N/4 = 200

The left side has 20 as the least common denominator meaning the above equation can be rewritten as

12N/20 +5N/20 = 200

17N = 20*200 ==> 17N = 4000.

Approximately 236 fruit bars were sold.

Note that 236 is 17/20 the number of fruit bars made, so THAT number is 236*20/17 = 277.6 ~ 278 fruit bars.
