There were a few reasons that white southerners supported the institution of slavery without taking part in it. A big reason would be the economic benefits that came from slavery, as the produce created often boosted the local economy. Another reason is really just overall racist views during the time, and believing that the institution of slavery followed the social norm.

The overwhelming majority of antebellum White Southerners were absolutely certain that in order to maintain White Supremacy, 'Negros' (as they were called in the 19th century) had to be kept in a state of slavery (as the Confederate Vice President, Alexander Stephens, was quoted as saying, slavery was the natural condition for 'Negros'). All White Southerners - slave owners and non-slave owners - benefited from White Supremacy. In addition, even though most White people in the antebellum South did not own slaves, that does not mean that most White Southerners didn't want to own slaves; the ownership of slaves freed individuals from back-breaking manual labor and was a mark of social status (most people in the United States are not millionaires - does that mean that most people in the United States don't want to be millionaires?)
