Below is a question given by my teacher:

Prompt: Choose one of the “products” offered by the Circle in part 1 of the novel. Explain what this product is and how Eggers represents it; does the author portray it as a good or bad thing? Then think about what this invention would look like in our world today. Do you think it would be positive for our current society? Why or why not? Support your answer with direct quotes from the novel.

I would add only this - Ask yourself, "what is valuable" in this novel. Are the products in the novel of some value to the characters...or do they create more conflict? (That's how you can get to the "good" vs "bad" question.)

Remember to cite evidence - use direct quotes to back up any of your answers, and to help you explain your answers.

I might have you break down this question into its essential parts in order to help your thought process.

1) Which product would you like to look at? Does it interest you? Why/why not? Be specific.

2) Find places in the novel where the product is mentioned. Do you notice anything? Look carefully at the language the author uses to describe the product or how characters interact with it. Based on the words Eggers uses and the tone they create, do you think Eggers is saying the product is a good or bad thing?

3) Apply the product to society today and share your thoughts. You could do this by imagining a specific situation where someone interacts with the product.

4) Use the work you did earlier finding quotes and what you already know about how the product works in the novel. How would the product translate into our world today? Be specific in your answer by drawing from the novel's example.
