Physics Question

#10. An FBD shows a 5 kg box on a rough surface being pulled to the right at a constant speed by a string that is at an angle of 30 degrees above the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and the surface is 0.30. The tension in the string is most likely

a. 16.97 N

b. 29.40 N

c. 14.47 N

But since it is at an angle of 30 degrees, doesn't it mean that 5x9.8 will not be the normal force because some of the normal force is being taken away by the tension? Therefore, wouldn't it also mean that we do not have enough information to solve the problem straight up? But since it is a multiple choice question, the only answer that would be lower than 16.97 is 14.47.

You are correct that there is a contribution from the vertical component of the tension which is T/2. This has to be subtracted from the weight to get the normal which becomes 14.7 - T/2. So the equation becomes Tcos30-(.3)(14.7-T/2)=0 Solving for T gives 14.47N.
