I hiked into the woods at 4 miles/hour and returned by the same route at 3 miles/hour. If the round trip took 3 1/2 hours, how many miles into the woods did I hike?

Distance = (Rate)(Time), so Time = Distance / Rate

Let x = one way distance.

Since total time = 3.5, we have x / 4 + x / 3 = 3.5

3x + 4x = 42

7x = 42

x = 6 miles
