In the 19th century, workers were tired of unfair working conditions whether it was low pay, long hours, or unsafe working conditions. This led to the rise of the labor movement in the 19th century, opposed by business leaders who did not want greater workplace democracy. Many strikes arose in the process like Homestead. At Homestead, at a Carnegie steel factory, workers were demonstrating and striking; eventually, it turned into a skirmish with the police that was eventually put down.
