The Pilgrims and Puritans Come to America
colonists migrated to the united states for a variety of reasons. They migrated to explore, earn money, freely promote their beliefs, and live on their property. The Puritans and Pilgrims arrived in America in search of religious liberty.
England left the Roman Catholic Church in the 1500s and established the Church of England. Everybody in England was required to be a part of it. Separatists were a group of persons who desired to break away from the English Church. The Separatists, led by William Bradford, talked about leaving England and establishing their community so that they may freely follow their faith. Bradford approached the Virginia Company with the request to be permitted to start a new empire in Virginia. The Virginia Company agreement with him, allowed the Pilgrims to sail the Mayflower towards Virginia in September 1620.
The Pilgrims' trek throughout the Atlantic was lengthy and perilous. They were blown off course by storms, and rather than docking in Virginia, they docked in Cape Cod, which is farther north. The Pilgrims chose this location for their settlement and named it Plymouth. They couldn't remain since there was no system of governance to follow. They had been granted a charter by the Virginia Company to settle in Virginia. For Plymouth, the charter was invalid. The crew onboard the Mayflower agreed to draft a governing plan for the colony. The Mayflower Compact was the name given to the government proposal. The men agreed to speak with one another regarding the colony's regulations, and they pledged to work as a team to make sure the colony's success. The paper was signed by all of the guys. Women were not permitted to vote. participate.
In October of 1620, the Pilgrims set foot onshore. The timing was not ideal for establishing colonies. In the wintertime, they had a hard time finding shelter and food. Half of the settlers had died by spring. The Pilgrims began planting crops and establishing their colony as soon as spring dawned. Samoset as well as Squanto taught the Pilgrims the ways of sowing grain and many other crops, as well as how to catch animals for meat and clothes. The colony was spared by the fall, and they observed their first Thanksgiving commemorate their victory. Some other groups fled England in 1630 in quest of religious liberty. The Puritans were the name given to this sect. Puritans intended to quit the Church of England in order to purify it by abandoning Catholic customs. They did not wish to completely break away from it; instead, they intended to make improvements.
Puritans desired independence in America because King Charles I threatened them with terrible consequences if they did not obey the Church of England.
The Massachusetts Bay Company granted the Puritans a concession to reside in New England. The Colony was founded by John Winthrop, who led a group of Puritans to the country. The colonists intended the settlement to be founded on Biblical teachings. They thought that if they followed God's rules, he would defend them. Winthrop hoped to use this colony as a model for all future colonies. The Massachusetts Bay Colony, like all the other kingdoms, set up a government. All congregants had the freedom to vote for ruler and General Court delegates. The colony's regulations would thereafter be made by the General Court.
The oldest English colonies were Jamestown, Roanoke Island Plymouth, and Massachusetts Bay Colony. They laid the path for the development of subsequent colonies. Is it going to be a simple task? Will the colonists have to live beneath English control indefinitely? Maybe time can tell if this is true.
