The price for an adult movie ticket is 1 1/3 more than a movie ticket for a child. Ines takes her daughter to the movie, buys a box of popcorn for $5.50, and spends $26.50. Write and solve an equation

Stephen C.

I'm curious to see how the Experts interpret "1 1/3 more than", in this problem. What if the problem said "1/3 more than"?

What if the problem said "1/3 more than"? How would you set up the cost equation then? Do you see the difficulty?

Thanks for pointing that out and I do agree that the wording is ambiguous. It still reads to me as more than in the sense of a sum to a higher price and not a proportion. I guess I would expect an "OF" or even a "times" instead of a "more than" for a proportion. The price for an adult movie ticket is 1 1/3 more than a movie ticket for a child. Maybe the student will get back to all of us.

Too often, word problems end up being more about language and culture than about mathematics. If native English speakers are unclear about the meaning of a word problem, how much more an ESL math student?
