Hypnosis has been a controversial topic in the past. However, most clinicians believe hypnotherapy can be a useful technique for clients to relax and focus their minds. According to the APA (2019), hypnotherapy has been effective at treating conditions, such as mood disorders, smoking, pain, anxiety, stress, and grief.
Hypnosis can be used for patient analysis or suggestion therapy. For analysis, hypnosis is used to relax the mind so that the root cause of a stressor, symptom, or disorder that is hidden in one's unconscious mind can be uncovered. Once it is revealed then it can be addressed in psychotherapy. For suggestion therapy, hypnosis enables a client to successfully respond to suggestions, which can help them change certain behaviors, such as smoking, nail biting, or change perceptions about pain.
