Hi Eric,
The term for an individual’s lack of insight with regard to their own mental illness is called anosagnosia.
It’s particularly prevalent amongst individuals with psychotic disorders, given the diagnoses inherently contain distorted thinking.
Anosagnosia is a significant contributing factor towards lack of compliance with prescribed psychotropic regimens, as the individual genuinely believes they are doing well and don’t need the medications.
Unfortunately, by the time these individuals do need their antipsychotic and/or mood stabilizer, their condition has generally deteriorated substantially, with behaviors potentially posing a significant danger to the individual, particularly with respect to self-harm.
