During the early Colonial period, suppression of independent religious thought and practice in Massachusetts was ironic because these European-based peoples had traveled to North America to secure freedom from religious and cultural oppression. The late 1600s and 1700s leaders of the new churches were hypocritical because they would not tolerate religious dissension in any form. Both irony and hypocrisy, therefore, were prevalent.
