The vertex equation for a parabola is y = a ( x - h)^ 2 + k. The vertex is h, k. If a is positive the parabola has both ends going up like a U. If a is negative the the parabola has both ends going down like a upside down U. The absolute value of the "a" term is how fast the ends go in the direction designated as the sign. In this example h = 3 and k = 0 for a vertex of 3, 0.
