- Read the poem out loud at least twice.
- Ground yourself in the literal: With many poems, it is important to ask "what is literally going on"--what scene, moment etc is the poem describing. The idea that a poem or piece of writing "can mean anything" or is open to every interpretation is incorrect.
- Poems are meant to be evocative: Look for patterns in word choice, figurative language, rhythm, structure, and sound. What are the patterns? Why is the author making these choices? What is the effect of these choices?
Look for words that sparkle or startle. Also look for the strongest sensory moments in the poem. What feelings or images does these moments evoke?
