When writing, what is the best way to get the audience to connect emotionally with a character?

Give the character some struggle! Struggle is a universal constant in most good storytelling. When a character struggles during a story—ranging from problems with a school bully or dealing with a father who's bed-ridden with lymphoma—the audience can grow some empathy for them in spite of character flaws that may become increasingly evident throughout the story.
