Remember that water has a higher specific heat capacity than land. Water is good at absorbing heat. So on a given day the land next to a large body water may receive the same amount of energy but the land will be warmed more. Warm air rises creating a void, near a large body of water the air above the water is cooler. Sea breeze. Or as I knew it, lake breeze off of Lake Michigan.
