There was once a store near the gates of a palace. The owner of the store would open up early in the morning and close late at night everyday. Near the front entrance, she hung a golden cage. In it, there was a beautiful yellow bird. She loved to watch as it groomed its feathers. People passed the store everyday on their way in and out of the palace and, sometimes, they would bump into her and the displays outside, damaging them. They almost never said sorry. The men who worked for the king were especially rude. One day, as the hustle and bustle of the day began, a poor man approached the store and asked for some food and water. The owner, seeing someone who needed help, told him to take what he wanted for free. But, instead of taking food, he man took the bird cage with the bird inside. Honoring her promise, she did not protest.
Now, the shopkeeper had no entertainment and the days seemed long. Months passed and she began to grow sad and even considered selling the store until, one day, the same man returned with the bird and said sorry for taking advantage of her kindness. Reunited with her pet, the woman was happy once again.
