You are correct.
"Far from skeptical" means he is NOT skeptical
"but he is enlightened" means that he IS enlightened
What does "Far from ...but" mean?
I read it in GRE test. The questions is that> Far from viewing Jefferson as a skeptical but enlightened intellectual, .....So, in my opinion, Jefferson is not skeptical, and he is enlightened. Is that right? I am not sure about the grammar of _far from A but B_ means.
