I'm guessing that you are needing the equation written out algebraically and then solved. So let's break down the original statement:
Nine more than the quotient of a number and 4 equals 3.
-nine more is the same as '+9'
-a number means to assign a variable, lets go with 'x'
-quotient means division, so the quotient of a number and 4 would be x/4
-equals 3 would be =3
-lastly, the word 'than' means that the part right after 'than' always moves to the front of the equation/expression ....... so
(x/4) + 9 = 3
Now to solve:
You'll want to undo each step (by doing the opposite operations), and whatever you do to one side, you do to the other side.
Step 1
(x/4) + 9 = 3 you'll want to subtract 9 from both sides
- 9 -9
Step 2
(x/4) = -6 because after you subtracted 9 from both sides (9-9 cancels out, and 3-9=-6)
Step 3
4(x/4) = -6 (4) you'll want to multiply both sides by 4 in order to undo the division by 4
Step 4
x = -24
