Edit after writing!

you want to get all your thoughts out in paper. We think so much faster than we can write, so it is better to just jot or type everything down. Once you have all of your ideas on paper, you can edit. Yes, it is also time consuming, and you will invest time in organizing your writing. BUT, the end result is better as you can see all of your initial thoughts in your writing and will know what to cut or have better ideas on what else to add.

Remember, let your brain spill out all ideas first. Edit after. And edit multiple times! You’ll see progress in your writing this way.

I advise my students to get their thoughts on paper as quickly as possible, especially if they are writing a challenging paper for school. I teach that you will make many revisions to your paper. Then when you are satisfied, (or nearly satisfied) with the content you then you begin the editing and then proofreading processes, in that order. To do the steps like this is the most efficient and effective way of using your time. You don't want to edit several paragraphs only to decide later that you are going to delete them. I have several handouts I use to teach effective editing and proofreading skills.
