Step 2 is incorrect. If he already added 1 negative x-tile to both sides and created zero pairs, he did not need to add 7 negative tiles as well. The problem would've looked like:
x + 7 = 3x + (-5)
-x -x
7 = 2x + (-5)
So he does not need to add 7 negative unit tiles because we want x to be by itself. Instead he should have add 5 positive unit tiles to both sides to create zero pairs so it would be
7 = 2x + (-5)
+5 +5
12 = 2x
Then he divides the 12 unit tiles evenly among the 2 x-tiles which would then give the solution of:
6 = x or x = 6
