(asked when you're on the train), what would be another way to say this, without using "get off" (which has other connotations) and still colloquial (either American or British English)? I thought about "exit" or "alight". Are there other, better ways to say this? Thank you.

"Get off" is the most common expression here for sure; no one will be alarmed if you use that phrase in this context. You could say "use" ("Which station should I use if I want to go to the university?"), but "get off at" sounds the most natural.
