Reading,

Reading

Children need to love reading in order to improve. I talk with children to learn about their specific interests and tutor them in reading about those things. I have completed graduate school courses in phonetics and linguistics and know the best ways to approach reading. I am also very patient and know, for example, that a child should rarely be interrupted while reading. The tutor should listen for errors and review those afterwards. This builds confidence in the reader.
Spelling,

Spelling

I have a degree in English and Comparative Literature. I have worked as a proofreader so I really had to know how to spell well enough to catch errors. My teaching and tutoring experience includes studying Linguistics (the study of how words are formed, how we use and organize words in language). Being a reader improves spelling.
Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

My degree is in English and Comparative Literature. I am a native speaker and I have a certificate in teaching English to speakers of other languages. I have also completed graduate coursework in Linguistics which is the study of how we use words to communicate. My years of experience as a tutor include working with children and adults in classroom and one-on-one to expand their vocabulary. To truly know a word, one must understand all of its meanings, hear the word spoken, and use the word many times.

I have classroom teaching and private tutoring experience which has included essay writing, literature analysis and comprehension. I taught a college entrance preparation course to young adults with an emphasis on essay writing and reading comprehension. Some of my private tutoring students have been speakers of other languages who want to increase their English vocabulary and writing skills through reading.

I am grateful to be her student!

I started the lessons with Denise since 2019 September. She is very patient and nice. I asked her to help with my emails writing, grammar correcting for speaking, and build up my confidence for using English with my colleagues. My English has improved so much over a year! I will continue the ESL lessons with her. Having lesson with her is the best thing in the week. I am really thankful!
