English does have a lot of words, but I don't let myself get overwhelmed. In typical conversation, we use a limited amount of words, so all you need is a good foundation. After you have that, you can start increasing your vocabulary a little at a time. I find that 1-3 new words/expressions every day is enough. I have signed up for three English language websites that provide a word of the day (with definition and use), an idiom, and a phrasal verb (verb used in an expression such as "turn off" or "carry out"). I keep a list of the new words and expressions that seem useful to me - if they are too specialized and I know I will never use them, I don't bother to write them down.
I write down new words when I am reading, and I google the definition. I think that the more you read, the better your vocabulary will become. Also, in order to remember and really learn a word or expression, you have to find a way to use it. Finally, don't be afraid to ask people to explain if they use a word you do not know or understand. That's the way we learn.
