'An' , 'a', and 'the' are the most frequently used singular articles (adjectives used before a noun). 'The' refers to a specific item, 'a' and 'an' refer to unspecified. "An' is used before words starting with a vowel (a,e.i.o.u). The boy took an apple from a dish on the table. apple and dish: not specified which apple, or which dish on the table; the table, not refrigerator.
