Why is the word auspicious popular among native Chinese learning English?

Translating from English into Chinese can be tricky, and often times leads to confusion or misinterpretation. In this case, “auspicious” loosely translates into a term with several meanings. One of those is the same as the English definition of auspicious, but another one is closer to the word fortunate or lucky. It is therefore no surprise that a culture which values luck, or good fortune as much as the Chinese do, would overuse a word that translates into something attached to good fortune and success.

Reasons I could think of:

1. "auspicious" is a textbook (mostly textbooks compiled and published in China) word and Chinese-speaking English learners are widely exposed to it
2. This word is considered "advanced" than simpler words like "lucky", and learners may equal the ability to use an "advanced" words to a better grasp or even mastery of English
3. As a native Chinese speaker myself, I feel like "auspicious" conveys the subtlety of the Chinese words "吉利“”吉祥“ better than more common words like "lucky"
4. For the same reasons, you may hear a lot "ominous" as well ;)
