Why is English thought to be one of the difficult subjects to pass for students?

English incorporates so many different languages, and sounds from those languages, that it requires many years of study (K-12) and perhaps, college, to begin to even master the language. In the United States, we also have dialects that can confuse a person, because those dialects may selectively sound different than what is commonly considered proper English.
