The first one is almost certainly more correct. You refer to a condition in the past. At the time, it's a simple statement in the present tense: .....IS too heavy to carry. Move it to the past and you have: ...WAS too heavy to carry. "carry" in both cases is present tense.
To understand why the second form is not right, try bringing it to the present:
".....is too heavy for me to have carried"----does not make sense.
Always look for the fewest number of words---eg, it might be best to say simply: "The box was too heavy to carry"
